Apartments near columbia university, new york? I’m moving to new york very soon, and i'm beginning my apartment hunt. Anybody who lives in New York or live Near Columbia University, please help. What apartments are within 5-10 mile radius near the university, and please give me apartment names and address. I don’t know anything about NY so giving me fifty st or whatever won’t help me. 5-10 mile radius? You do realize that as a columbia student you won't have a car, right? Morningside Heights — neighborhood right around Columbia. College-town like, lots of European cafes, expensive. Mostly small apartment building, some large ones. Inwood — neighborhood at the very top of Manhattan (approx. 190th street and up — below that’s Washington Heights, don’t let brokers tell you otherwise). Formerly an Irish neighborhood, now a lot of Hispanic folks, near a very large and nice park. Mostly large apartment buildings. Riverdale — neighborhood in the west Bronx (which is the borough just north of Manhattan). Very wealthy, heavily white, some big houses/estates but also some large apartment buildings. Yonkers — City/town in Westchester County, just north of the Bronx. The southern part, near Katonah Avenue, is an Irish immigrant enclave. Not on the subway system b/c it's not in the City, but served by MetroNorth commuter trains (which go to 125th Street on the east side…not especially close to Columbia) and buses. You can’t realistically do your apartment search by getting tips on complexes and calling them, like you might in other American cities. Many apartment buildings are small, and most large ones don't need to advertise. Go on Craigslist, look at prices, and decide which neighborhoods you want to focus on. Make a map of which areas will work for you (in terms of access to campus, either by walking or public transit, and in terms of other factors important to you like access to shopping or parks). Do your actual visiting of apartments through Craigslist and/or through a broker. If you decide to rent through a broker, that may be more efficient, but it may also cost you 1-2 months' rent. In the end, if you’re really a Columbia student, you have access to the resources of Columbia's housing office, and through them you can rent out “university housing” that’s slightly cheaper than other morningside heights apartments. This may be your best bet if you have no idea what's going on in the NYC apartment market.
